Welder (Brownsville Harlingen)

Direct hire on the Nelvamar crew. 80 openings, $13.66 per hour prevailing wage, employment from October 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027.

Job Description

Basic job duties

  • Weld metal pipe and plate components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions for industrial structural and pipe applications as defined by project specifications, drawings, and welding procedures.
  • Properly set up, utilize, troubleshoot, and operate welding equipment. Experience with FCAW (flux core arc welding), RMD (regulated metal deposition), GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding), and SMAW (shielded metal arc welding) processes.
  • Lay out, fit, position, align, and secure parts and components prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, flange lip up pins, wrap arounds, center finders, and rulers.
  • Clamp, hold, tack weld, heat bend, grind, or bolt component parts to properly fit plate and pipe to obtain required configuration and positions for welding.
  • Weld with minimal defects as defined in ASME B31.3.
  • Adhere and comply with all company and OSHA safety rules and guidelines.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine the appropriate welding process and materials.
  • Working knowledge of modular fabrication practices, including shop based assembly of pre engineered structural and piping modules, and the methods used to transport and erect completed modules at final installation sites.

Shift schedule

Based on client need. Workers will work one of two shifts: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM or 3:30 PM to 12:00 AM with a half hour lunch break, on varying days of the week from Monday through Sunday based on client need.

Minimum requirements

  • Must pass pre hire drug test and medical physical.
  • Must pass a written and functional test administered at the project worksite or Nelvamar worksite in Texas at the employer's expense.
  • Must be able to lift and move a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Must be willing and able to climb and work in high places that may exceed 200 feet in height, and in confined spaces.
  • These requirements are applied equally to U.S. and H 2B workers.

Wage and benefits

$13.66 per hour prevailing wage as determined by the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Foreign Labor Certification for SOC 51 4121 in the Brownsville Harlingen, TX MSA. Workers will be paid at least the highest of the federal, state, or local minimum wage and the prevailing wage. Overtime paid at time and a half after 40 hours per week.

Three fourths guarantee

Nelvamar guarantees employment for a total number of work hours equal to at least three fourths of the workdays in each 12 week period of the total period of employment, beginning on the first workday after the worker's arrival.

Transportation and subsistence (H 2B applicants)

For H 2B workers, Nelvamar will provide or reimburse transportation and subsistence from the place from which the worker has come to the place of employment, after the worker completes 50 percent of the period of employment. Return transportation and subsistence will be provided or paid by Nelvamar upon completion of the period of employment, except where the worker will not return due to subsequent employment with another employer.

Tools and equipment

Nelvamar provides all tools, supplies, and equipment required to perform the job at no cost to the worker.
