Construction Laborer (Brownsville Harlingen)

Direct hire on the Nelvamar crew. 80 openings, $11.43 per hour prevailing wage, employment from October 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027.

Job Description

Basic job duties

  • Perform physical tasks to support construction and fabrication activities at industrial and heavy construction worksites.
  • Load, unload, identify, and move materials, tools, and equipment to and from work areas, including steel plate, pipe, structural members, rigging, scaffolding components, and consumables.
  • Assist craft workers including fitters, welders, pipefitters, and ironworkers by staging materials, holding components in position, passing tools, and performing support tasks as directed.
  • Clean and prepare work areas before, during, and after construction activities, including removing debris, grinding slag, wire brushing weld joints, and maintaining housekeeping standards to meet OSHA and Company requirements.
  • Erect and dismantle scaffolding, temporary barricades, and fall protection systems under the direction of qualified personnel.
  • Operate hand and power tools including grinders, needle guns, drills, impact wrenches, band saws, and hand torches.
  • Mix, pour, and spread materials such as concrete, grout, and sealants as directed.
  • Perform basic rigging tasks, tend hoses and leads, and serve as fire watch during hot work activities in accordance with Company hot work permit procedures.
  • Assist in the layout, fit up, and tack welding of components under the supervision of a certified welder or fitter.
  • Welding skills required: Working knowledge of welding processes sufficient to perform tack welds, temporary support welds, and assist with weld joint preparation. Experience with FCAW, RMD, GTAW, and SMAW processes as directed by project requirements.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine the appropriate welding process and materials.
  • Working knowledge of modular fabrication practices, including shop based assembly of pre engineered structural and piping modules, staging and material flow within a modular fabrication yard, dimensional control at tie in points, and the methods used to transport and erect completed modules at final installation sites.

Shift schedule

Based on client need. Workers will work one of two shifts: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM or 3:30 PM to 12:00 AM with a half hour lunch break, on varying days of the week from Monday through Sunday based on client need.

Minimum requirements

  • Must pass pre hire drug test and medical physical.
  • Must pass a written and functional test administered at the project worksite or Nelvamar worksite in Texas at the employer's expense.
  • Must be able to lift and move a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Must be willing and able to climb and work in high places that may exceed 200 feet in height, and in confined spaces.
  • These requirements are applied equally to U.S. and H 2B workers.

Wage and benefits

$11.43 per hour prevailing wage as determined by the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Foreign Labor Certification for SOC 47 2061 in the Brownsville Harlingen, TX MSA. Workers will be paid at least the highest of the federal, state, or local minimum wage and the prevailing wage. Overtime paid at time and a half after 40 hours per week.

Three fourths guarantee

Nelvamar guarantees employment for a total number of work hours equal to at least three fourths of the workdays in each 12 week period of the total period of employment, beginning on the first workday after the worker's arrival.

Transportation and subsistence (H 2B applicants)

For H 2B workers, Nelvamar will provide or reimburse transportation and subsistence from the place from which the worker has come to the place of employment, after the worker completes 50 percent of the period of employment. Return transportation and subsistence will be provided or paid by Nelvamar upon completion of the period of employment, except where the worker will not return due to subsequent employment with another employer.

Tools and equipment

Nelvamar provides all tools, supplies, and equipment required to perform the job at no cost to the worker.
